Pedestrians stroll along the promenade of the Brooklyn Bridge, connecting Manhattan and Brooklyn, New York City, 1891. The suspension bridge was opened to traffic in 1883. When bridge designer John A Roebling incorporated the promenade into the design of the bridge, he said it was important that the people take part in the leisures afforded by the bridge.
